Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Named in India A Squad and the debate has been raging for months. Is the 15 year old ready for international cricket?
On Thursday, the BCCI gave their answer. And it wasn’t the one everyone expected.
Instead of handing him a senior cap, India’s selectors named him in the India A squad for the triseries in Sri Lanka a move that looks like patience on the surface, but might actually be the final countdown to something much bigger.
Here’s why the dates tell a story nobody is talking about.
The Official Squad: Who Made the Cut?
India A Squad ODI TriSeries, Sri Lanka (June 2026)
Role | Players |
Captain | Tilak Varma |
Vice Captain | Riyan Parag |
Batters | Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Priyansh Arya, Ayush Badoni, Suryansh Shedge |
All rounders | Nishant Sindhu, Harsh Dubey, Vipraj Nigam, Yudhvir Singh, Arshad Khan |
Wicket-Keepers | Prabhsimran Singh, Kumar Kushagra |
Pacers | Anshul Kamboj, Yash Thakur |
Why India A and Not the Senior Team?
Irfan Pathan said it loud in April: “Don’t make this boy wait too long.” After Sooryavanshi smashed 39 off 14 balls including two sixes off Bumrah the calls for a senior cap grew impossible to ignore.
So why India A?
One word: Prithvi Shaw. Once hailed as the next Tendulkar, rushed into international cricket too fast, and now struggling to find a place even in an IPL XI. The BCCI has clearly learned that lesson.
Moving Sooryavanshi step by step Ranji → domestic T20 → List A → India A → Senior team is not hesitation. It’s protection.
The Date Nobody Is Talking About

The Sri Lanka triseries ends June 21. India’s UK tour begins June 28.
That’s a seven day window. And the BCCI knows it.
If Sooryavanshi lights up Dambulla the way he has lit up everything else, the selectors will find it very hard to leave him out of the UK squad. Sri Lanka isn’t just a stepping stone it might be the audition that changes everything.

Sooryavanshi's Record Journey: Age by Age
No Indian cricketer has ever moved this fast through the system:
- Age 12 — Ranji Trophy debut vs Mumbai. One of the youngest ever.
- Age 13 — Youngest player in Indian T20 cricket (Syed Mushtaq Ali).
- Age 13 — Youngest Indian in List A cricket (Vijay Hazare Trophy).
- Age 14 — IPL 2025: century off 35 balls vs Gujarat Titans.
- Age 15 — U-19 World Cup final: 175 vs England. India win the title.
- Age 15 — IPL 2026: 440 runs, SR 236.56, 40 sixes in 11 innings.
- Age 15 — India A call-up. Sri Lanka. June 2026.
All before his 16th birthday.
What He Still Needs to Prove

The IPL is not international cricket. Facing swing in Nottingham, spin in Galle, or bounce in Perth is a completely different challenge. Right now Sooryavanshi thrives when the ball is in his zone at the highest level, he’ll need patience and discipline too.
That’s exactly what this Sri Lanka tour is for.
What Happens Next?
If he performs in Dambulla, two doors open immediately:
- Senior call up for the UK tour starting June 28
- India A vs England T20Is in July another high profile audition
Either way, the same destination. Just a matter of when.
If Sooryavanshi delivers in Sri Lanka, even the BCCI may find it impossible to make him wait much longer.
