Liam Dawson Retires from First Class Cricket 20 Seasons, 380 Wickets, and a Career That Refused to Peak Too Early

Liam Dawson Retires from First Class Cricket

Liam Dawson Retires from First Class Cricket: Liam Dawson did not go quietly. In 2024, he claimed three national awards, forced his way back into the England Test side after an eight year absence, and took a wicket with the seventh ball of his comeback. Only then at 36, with a T20 World Cup still fresh in his legs did he decide to walk away from red ball cricket.

Furthermore, this is not a story about decline. Instead, it is one of county cricket’s most quietly extraordinary careers.

The career that finally got its flowers

The PCA awarded Dawson not one but three prizes in 2024: Player of the Year, Overall Domestic MVP, and County Championship Player of the Year. At 34, the recognition was long overdue and it finally gave England the push they needed.

After eight years out of the Test side, selectors recalled him for Old Trafford against India in July 2025. With his seventh ball, he struck. The crowd erupted.

Yet what followed was brutal. He ended with 1 for 140, India escaped with a draw, and selectors dropped him from the Ashes touring party. In truth, English cricket still owes that question an honest answer.

The numbers that tell the real story

MN
First class wickets380
First class centuries18
Hampshire appearances211
Hampshire runs (21st century)10,000+
White ball trophies6 (inc. all 3 T20 titles)

Only Robin Smith, Jimmy Adams and James Vince have scored more first class runs for Hampshire in the 21st century. No player in the modern era has made more than 200 appearances for the club. Dawson is the only one.

Why now and why it makes sense

Straightforwardly, first class cricket takes a physical toll that was starting to compromise the format where he still holds genuine England ambitions. Four Championship matches in 2026 with limited success ultimately made the decision clear.

Consequently, he stays at Hampshire for all white ball cricket, continues with Manchester Originals in the Hundred, and featured at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Moreover, an England recall remains realistic.

This is a pivot, not a farewell.

Dawson won his PCA awards at 34. Got his Test recall at 35. Played T20 World Cup cricket at 36. The red ball chapter is closed. The white ball story is not finished yet.
